Happiness is the main goal of the majority of human kind. People everywhere are looking for special clues on what can bring them the most happiness. Lots of people look for it in the wrong areas: drugs, money, sex, adrenaline rushes etc. For Christians its a lot easier because we don't have to stress over our lives since we've got the big man watching out for us, but even as Christians our lives can be unbalanced. We've all seen the man with the guitar, singing about Jesus, happy as a bluebird, but he looks like crap. Would he still be as happy if he could smell himself? He would probably have more friends if he washed up, we all know that. The key to living a long, healthy, wise life is to keep a balance and harmony between your soul, spirit, and body.
Now I bet you're thinking "Balance and harmony? Sounds like that chi crap! That's not Christian!!" HELLO! Where do you think they got it?! All things come from God. Most things get distorted by us humans.
Here are some verses to back up my words:
"Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well." - 3 John 2
"Love the lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your strength." - Deuteronomy 6:5
"Love the lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your strength." - Deuteronomy 6:5
And what is heart but Spirit and what is strength but Body?
The three go hand in hand.
My necklace I w
ear represents the combination of these three, reminding me to take care of myself. My sister says I study too much...which means I am probably ignoring something I shouldn't. It reminds me to take the time, to go see friends, to paint my toenails etc.
Notice that the spirals are all equal. You shouldn't take care of your body more than your Spirit and you shouldn't pay more attention to the state of your soul then you do the state of your body.
This sign also represents God the father, God the son and the Holy Spirit : equal, separate and one.
You might see this sign in other places where it doesn't belong. Like all things this sign has been manipulated by other "religious" organizations. Sort of like the fish is a Darwin sign if it has feet on it - you've all seen those bumper stickers. Or like Hitler using a Tibetan Peace sign.
So what is the difference between the soul and the spirit? (I hope you've already identified your body since it's the only one that is physically palpable.) And what are the different ways to take care of each of these elements?
SOUL
Ways to take care of our souls:
- Prayer
- Worshiping with a group of people weekly... it tends to give you a boost.
- Keep constant in the care of our Spirits and Bodies.
SPIRIT
Ways to take care of our souls:
- Meditation. Not in the form of religious yoga, but sitting there and thinking about the blessings, the beauty, and the nature God has provided for us to enjoy. It will boost your spirits, I promise.
- Get in touch with your creative side. Play music, sing, paint, decorate, woodwork, design. Get creative with gardening, if you enjoy that.
- Volunteer. Giving to someone without expecting anything in return is a beautiful feeling and gives you energy even if you feel wiped at the end of the day.
- Be social and relational. People enjoy being around people. I am an introvert but there are times when I really enjoy being around people for people's sake.
BODY
I hope everyone has got this down already. I don't need to talk about this that much. We've all heard the age old lines already.
- Exercise. Even if it's just walking around the block with your hubby.
- Eat Right. Less sodium, more veggies and fruits and lean meat.
- Pamper yourself a little. Indulge yourself with that hot bath and cookies every once and a while. This doesn't only help your body it helps your spirit too.
- Cleanliness. Literally and Figuratively. One of the things highly stressed in nursing is clean hands. Why? So we don't spread germs. Stay pure in body and mind and you won't spread the germs of gossip, hate, disruption. And literally the spreading of AIDS, H1N1, and bacteria.
So now you've got a pretty good idea of what to do. Obviously there are hundreds more you could do in a day, but is important to keep it balanced. Imagine a table with legs at different heights. Same Difference.
Good luck!

SOUL
"The spiritual, immaterial essence embodied in all rational and spiritual human beings. An active and essential part." - Merriam-Webster Dictionary.
In our Gathering devotional last night one girl in the group said that what comes into the body can change your soul. Therefore our lifestyles (body) can minipulate our souls and our attitudes (spirit) can change the color of our souls.Ways to take care of our souls:
- Prayer

SPIRIT
"An animate, emotional, vital, principle, immaterial, intelligent part of a physical organism." - Merriam-Webster Dictionary.
Attitude is everything, as my dad regularly pointed out to us. But spirit isn't just attitude, it's what comes out of your mouth, what your actions say, what you do on a day to day basis, how you view things, and how you relate to people.Ways to take care of our souls:
